We have tried to keep this simple, because the site itself is simple. We do not ask you to sign up, we do not set cookies unless you say we may, and we do not sell anything about you.
Who we are
This site is run by Somnus Rest, an independent project based in the United Kingdom. For anything to do with your privacy, write to [email protected].
What happens when you visit
Hosting. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic technical details (such as your browser type) to deliver pages and to protect the site from attack. We do not use this information to identify you. Cloudflare may process it outside the UK under appropriate safeguards; see Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
Cookies. The site sets no cookies unless you agree to visitor statistics (see Analytics, below). Your answer to that question, yes or no, is remembered in your browser’s own storage on your device, so that we do not ask again on every page.
Fonts and images. Our fonts and images are served from our own site, so viewing a page does not send requests to font or image services run by anyone else.
Analytics. We would like to know how many people visit, which pages they read and which listening links they press, so that we can make the site better. For this we use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, and only if you say yes when the site asks. If you say no, or do not answer, nothing is loaded from Google and no cookies are set.
If you say yes, Google Analytics sets cookies on your device (their names begin with _ga, and they last up to two years) that let it recognise a returning browser. It records the pages you view, the links you press, your approximate location (country and town, worked out from your IP address, which is not kept), and technical details such as your browser and screen size. We see this as totals and trends, and we do not use it to identify you or for advertising. Google processes the information on our behalf and may do so outside the UK under appropriate safeguards; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
You can change your mind at any time with the “Cookie choices” link at the foot of every page. Choosing no removes the cookies.
When you play something
Podcast audio. Our audio files are stored on podcast.somnusrest.com. When you press play, the request passes through OP3, an open podcast statistics service, so that we can count how many times each episode is played. OP3 records technical details of the request, such as your IP address and podcast app or browser, under its own privacy policy. We only ever see totals.
YouTube videos. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. When you do, the video plays from youtube-nocookie.com and Google’s privacy policy applies to that video.
Links to other services. Buttons for YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies.
If you write to us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. Email to somnusrest.com addresses is forwarded to our inbox by Cloudflare Email Routing. We use your message only to reply to you, and we delete correspondence when it is no longer needed.
Our legal basis
Where UK data protection law applies, we rely on our legitimate interests in running a secure, working website, and in answering messages people send us. For visitor statistics we rely on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Your rights
You have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how we use it. Write to [email protected]. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Changes
If we change how the site handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
