The Counting of the Whales

A mariner, gently stranded on a small island when the tide carries his boat away, meets a great whale hungry to know how many of her family remain in the bay. Out of courtesy rather than cunning, he offers to count them, and in the slow counting, a road home appears where none had seemed possible.
