On a snowbound afternoon in an old college library, a student carrying an old grievance finds a forgotten book of parables and reads of a man who rages at a boat that drifts into his, until he sees that no one is aboard. In the faded pencil marks of a reader long gone, she recognizes herself, and quietly sets down what she has been holding.
