On a river valley held fast by an enchanted fog, an old strategist meets a magician’s three difficulties not with force but with patience, invention, and a still mind, gathering arrows in boats of straw, rolling wooden carts over the mountain when the wind turns, and letting a single note of a guqin fade until the trouble drifts away and grass grows green over the old wheel ruts.
