The Mountain Trees and the Two Geese

On a slow autumn day in the pine-and-oak mountains of ancient China, an old teacher and his young student meet a tree too crooked to fell and, that same evening, a goose too silent to keep. Between the two fates, the student learns to set down the habit of weighing everything as gain or loss, and to rest instead in the unhurried way of things.
