The Paw on the Slipper

Each afternoon, when the sunlight reaches a faded corner of the rug, an old dog crosses the room and rests one paw on his owner’s slipper. She spends a long, gentle season trying to understand why, until she discovers that countless other households hold small unexplained rituals of their own, and learns that some joys are not meant to be solved, only kept.
