The Pond That Learned to Sing at Dusk
A weary traveler carrying two sleeping children asks only for a handful of water from a reed-fringed pond, and the small-hearted men who refuse her are gently given the small life they had already chosen, becoming the frogs whose patient evening chorus still rises from the shallows.
Retold from The Metamorphoses, by Ovid, translated by Henry T. Riley.
