The Quern That Knew How to Stop
In a grey northern fishing village, a poor man is given a wonder-mill by two quiet helpers beyond the headland, along with two words: one that starts the grinding, and one that stills it. He learns to use the second word early and often, a wise queen builds a small law upon his example, and a merchant who forgets the stilling word gives the sea its salt: a gentle allegory of ambition governed by the knowledge of enough.
Retold from The Book of Nature Myths, by Florence Holbrook.
