In a quiet walled courtyard beneath a full moon, an old lord worries over a quarrel with a neighbouring house, and a servant girl with unusual stillness of mind sets out by night to return a single borrowed object instead of harm. When peace settles again, she kneels on the swept stones and gently tells him why she came to serve, and what debt she has finally set right.
