The Woodpecker, the Tortoise, and the Deer

Beside a mist-covered forest lake in the old Jātaka country, a deer, a tortoise, and a woodpecker share their days among the sepaṇṇi trees. When the deer’s hoof is held by a hunter’s leather cord one quiet dawn, each friend offers only what it has, a small beak, slow jaws, and patience, and together they loosen what none could loosen alone, learning that friendship is not half of a good life but the whole of it.
